Forehand Groundstroke:
1. Preparation (The Coiling):
- The racquet is taken back with both hands and shoulders. The whole upper body turns sideways keeping the head still and eyes on the ball all the time. Notice how the left hand remains on the throat of the racket longer to ensure a short backswing and to control the face of the racquet.
- The right elbow is elevated and the racquet is pointed up in about 45* angle toward the sky.
- The weight is loaded on the right foot which is positioned somewhat behind the path of the incoming ball.
2. Contact (Swing & Contact):
- The racquet forms a small C-loop in the air and drops under the path of the ball with the bottom of the racquet pointed up toward the approaching ball.
- Whole upper body and hips start uncoiling as the swing begins and the body weight begins to be transferred from the right foot to the left foot.
- Left arm moves across the body as part of the uncoiling process and for balance.
- The head remains still and eyes “glued” on the ball.
- The contact is being made in front of the right hip about waist height. The head of the racquet travels in a low to high and through the ball trajectory to create topspin.
3. Finish (Follow-through & Recovery):
- The stroke should be finished with the right elbow up and pointed toward the net and the racquet over the shoulder or if a lot of topspin is applied on the ball, the follow-through is around the left elbow or hip.
- Notice the 180* body turn and the weight transferred on the left foot.
- The recovery is made with a split step to get the body in balance and ready for the next stroke.
