1. Preparation (Split step & Turn)
- The volley begins with a split step to get the body in balance with the weight distributed evenly on both feet; feet are about shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent, racquet held in front of the chest;

- Notice the left hand that “cradles” the throat of the racquet; the right hand holds the grip loosely with a “continental/hammer grip”.

- The movement to the ball is initiated with the foot closest to the ball, the body turns slightly toward the ball (about 45* to the net);

- Racquet is positioned behind and above the path of the incoming ball with the face slightly open and a very abbreviated back swing; the grip and the forearm should form a 90* angle.

2. Contact:

- Next step is made with the outside foot (the one opposite the side of the ball) toward the ball and the weight is transferred forward (some of the power comes from stepping into the ball).

- Depending on the speed the ball travels, the volley should be contacted out in front of the chest with a punching/blocking motion.

- At contact the racquet should travel about 20* downward with the face slightly open to create underspin and to send the ball over the net.

- Immediately after the contact, the racquet should decelerate and “freeze”.

- Important: Avoid a backswing and a follow-through on the volley!

3. Recovery:

- Right after the contact, the player should come back in the ready position as quickly as possible considering that the distance between the volleyer and his opponent is shorter (compared to both players on the baseline) - a quick recovery is a must...
